Question Description
I’m working on a writing report and need a sample draft to help me study.
Prompt: In Gulliver’s Travels Book IV, Jonathan Swift presents readers with the juxtaposition of three satiric “cultures”: The Houyhnhnms, the Yahnoos, and the European Yahoos (including Gulliver himself). Your first option for a Close Reading Paper is to throughly each of the satiric cultures Swift creates in Gullivers Travelsconsidering their attributes (positive qualities) and deficits (negative qualities) in order to respond to the following questions: 1) What is the nature of each culturemeaning which aspects of the species connect with innate or instinctive thoughts and/or behaviorsand what is the nurture of each culturemeaning which aspects of the species are socially constructed? 2) Considering that the purpose of satire is to reform, what messaging is Swift attempting to communicateexplicitly and/or implicitlythrough his representation of each “culture”? 3) Where do you think Swift would position himself on the question of whether nature or nurture is more responsible for the problem of evil in individuals and in society as a whole? (It might help you to think of this as asking you to identify Swift’s number on our class’s X/Y axis graph).
Requirements: Craft a thesis-driven argument in response to this final question, integrating a primary source supported analysis of the first four questions to “unpack” your thesis (5+ pages). Your paper should include the integration of a minimum of four direct quotations from Swift’s novel that you analyze at close proximity and document per MLA standards. Additionally, you should include an MLA formatted Works Cited page as the final page of your document (this does not count towards the required minimum page length). Please use the MLA handouts on General Format, Citing Fiction, and Works Cited available through eCampus as guides.
