In Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud writes that”It is always possible to bind together a considerable number of peoplein love, so long as there are other people left over to receive themanifestations of their aggressiveness.”

Kristeva’s Powers of Horror follows up on Freud byinvestigating what happens when either an individual’s or a group’sidentity is constructed relative to she calls “an Object of fear andfascination”.

First, explain Kristeva’s distinction between an object vs. an abject.

Second, explain the impact she sees this distinction having on the construction of either gendered or racialized bodies.

Kristeva Application

• First, identify acontemporary social or political event that you will apply Kristeva to– you may reuse an event from earlier in the course if you would like.
• Second, explain this event from the point of view of one group treating another as an Abject.
• Third, hypothesize how this event might have turned out differently if the second group had been treated as an Object instead.
