Assignment Description: There are very few professions where individuals come into such close contact with so many different cultures and beliefs. These cultural differences can impact how patients seek care, how well the plan of care is understood, and compliance with the plan of care. This challenge requires nurses to consider all patients as a product of their ethnic and cultural beliefs.
Assignment Directions: Complete the preparatory activities described in the Unit D Introduction under Student Preparation. You may be using information from all of the assigned unit chapters and you must also obtain additional information related to culture/gender depending on the case-study you choose.
You will write a formal APA paper assessing a case study and incorporate various communication concepts into your paper. This paper should demonstrate an in-depth understanding and personalization of the theories, concepts, and/or strategies discussed in the unit. Viewpoints and interpretations should be insightful and well supported. You should present clear examples as appropriate.

- Your paper should feature three to four pages of content and include the following sections. Total number of pages excludes the title and reference pages.
- Title Page
- Body of paper: Include the below information:
- An introductory paragraph- State clearly the purpose of the paper. What is the main reason for writing the paper? Explain briefly the major points to be covered in the paper and why readers should be interested in the topic.
- Introduce the case study by summarizing the information. Do not directly copy and paste the case study information.
- Using the Patient-Safe Transformational Model of Communication (page 11 in textbook) as a guide, list and assess communication risk factors found in the case study. List three (3) risk factors from the risk factor circle in the model. Give an example demonstrating how each risk factor applies, such as: English as a second language is a risk factor because the patients primary language is French, fear is a risk factor in this scenario because the nurse observed the patient pull away when the nurse put on gloves.
- Describe how diagnosis, hospitalization and other outside influences can affect communication related to the situation in the case study.
- Discuss how diversity and lifestyle differences contribute to communication barriers in your chosen scenario. Do this by discussing one or two main points from the patients culture that are different from the predominant culture. Do they use complementary medicine? Are they patriarchal? As a culture have they been subjected to abuse or stigma? Write what the differences are, then write why they might make communication difficult.
- What specific communication strategies could the nurse employ to improve communication and compliance in the situation you described? Go back to the Patient-Safe Transformational Model. For each risk factor, pick out an appropriate strategy from the patient safe communication strategies circle, that the nurse could use to improve communication.
- Conclusion paragraph: Summarize the key points in the body of the paper. Do not introduce new information in the conclusion.
- Reference Page: The title page and reference page are not counted towards the suggested number of content pages.
- Information in paper must be supported by evidence. Provide at least one reference that is specific to communication as it pertains to diversity, culture, or gender in the chosen case study. In-text citations must be used and the associated reference must be listed on the reference list.
- The paper is to be written following the APA (7th edition) guidelines. APA format is double spaced, Times Roman 12 pt font (or other approved font as listed in the APA manual), and appropriate headings to organize the paper. (See APA Manual, page 47-49 for heading information) It is suggested that you use the Word or Google APA Paper Template and check the paragraph settings remove extra space before or after paragraphs, so the reference page title and references are evenly double spaced.
