For Derrida, from the point of view of traditionalethics “forgiveness can only be considered on the condition that it beasked, in the course of a scene of repentance attesting at once to theconsciousness of the fault, the transformation of the guilty, and the atleast implicit obligation to do everything to avoid the return ofevil.”

Yet, he himself would like to re-theorize a type of forgivenessthat can instead “give place to another peace, without forgetting,without amnesty, fusion, or confusion”.

First, explain Derrrida’s critique of the traditional ethics of forgivenss as a “logic of exchange.”

Second, explain one (1) element or implication that Derrida sees in this re-theorization of forgiveness.

Third, argue either for or against Derrida’s re-theorization of the traditional ethics of forgiveness.

Derrida Application

• Fourth, arguefor the version of forgiveness you presented in either section two orsection three of this question — would the “traditional” or”re-theorized” instantiation of forgiveness be “better” in this context,and why or why not?
