Question Description
Discussion 2: Evaluating Existing Measures
In discussion 1, you considered how you might create an instrument for measuring a phenomenon or client issue. For this week’s Discussion 2, choose and evaluate an existing instrument to measure the concept you identified in Discussion 1. Consider how you would compare your original measurement to the existing measurement.
To Prepare: Review the following at the Walden Library on how to find existing instruments:

By Day 5
Posta brief explanation of the existing measurement instrument that you identified. Then, compare your original measurement approach to the existing instrument. Next, explain how you would revise or replace your original measurement plan. Finally explain the advantages and/or disadvantages of using existing instruments for measurement. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.
By Day 7
Respond to a colleague’s post by suggesting one alternative advantage or disadvantage of their chosen existing instrument of measurement. Explain why your suggestions have value. Please use the resources to support your answer.
Colleague: Chandler
Post a brief explanation of the existing measurement instrument that you identified.
The scale that I chose to use in comparison to the work – family conflict scale is the Work Family Integration scale which is designed to measure individual differences in work-family role integration. Construct validity was shown through moderate correlations with variables such as job and life satisfaction. Responses were given on a 5-point scale. Higher scores indicated higher levels of role integration.
Then, compare your original measurement approach to the existing instrument.
The original measurement tool that I chose was the work-family conflict scale. Both instruments help to measure the stressors related to an individual’s social environment such as work, family, and everyday activities. The survey questions asked on both scales assess relationships of the clients and asked direct questions related to the stressors in their social environment.
Next, explain how you would revise or replace your original measurement plan.
I would revise the original tool that I chose by including questions that helps measure clients current job satisfaction. The work family conflict scale only measure work to family conflict and family to work conflict for use with parents of young children.
Finally explain the advantages and/or disadvantages of using existing instruments for measurement.
The advantages of this measurement would be that the researcher will be able to measure all aspects related to a client’s social environment. This will include their satisfaction with their role in their jobs, social life and home life. The measurement will help determine the blurred boundaries of work to family boundaries and relationships.
