For this assignment, students will examine the mission, vision, and value statements for the organization where they work, review the backgrounds of the organizational leaders, locate one policy and procedure that identifies the role of nursing in the organization, and determine if nursing is well represented within the organization reflecting the importance of nursing in delivery of care within your organization. Students will outline the knowledge, skills, and attitudes nurses must acquire in order to advocate for greater nursing leadership representation in positions of power within healthcare organizations.
A concept map will be created identifying methods of communication on the macro level (organizational wide) through to the micro level (nursing unit). Include on this concept map lines of authority, different types of communication (formal, informal, diagonal), and the types of communication between sub-groups (nurse-physicians, nurse-physical therapy, nurse-housekeeping). Identify barriers to communication within this organizational review and how these barriers to effective communication interfere with effective and safe nursing practice.
