Florida Institute of Technology Solve the Chemistry Equations Questions

Florida Institute of Technology Solve the Chemistry Equations Questions

Question Description

1. Calculate the mass of sodium alginate powder and deionized water needed to make two 25 mL samples of solution. Choose one sample to be a lower concentration, and one sample to be a higher concentration within the range of 0.25% to 1.5% (weight/volume).

2. Calculate the mass of calcium chloride powder and deionized water needed to make:

a. 300 mL of a 2% weight solution of calcium in deionized water.

b. 300 mL of a 5% weight solution of calcium in deionized water.

3. Refer to the purpose of the lab. Calcium alginate gel beads will be fabricated from various percent weight sodium alginate solutions and 2% and 5% wt. calcium alginate solutions during this lab. You will determine the rate of dispensation and size of sodium alginate solution drops used to form the alginate gel beads. In order to complete the procedure, select:

Syringe pump dispensation rates (upper limit of the machine: 0.1 mL/hour, lower limit of the machine: 126.7 mL/hour)

Syringe needle gauge size(s) (choose from: 18, 22, and 26 gauge)

• Stir rate(s)

• Distance(s) between needle tip and surface of calcium chloride solution

Be sure to set up your procedure so that you will be able to gather enough data to perform the calculations and answer the post-lab questions. Consider that you will be performing the procedure for four different sodium alginate-calcium chloride solution concentration combinations. Be sure you can complete your procedure during the allotted lab time.

4. Refer to the purpose, background and available materials. Propose a method for determining gel shape, size, and gelation time. Use this in developing your procedure.

a. NOTE: You will have access to digital calipers, ImageJ, the microscope and computer to use for this if desired.
