All papers must be word-processed. Double space and use a 12-point standard font. Margins should be 1 inch all the way around the page.
You will use MLA-style documentation in all papers. Every paper will have a Works Cited and will use parenthetical, in-text citations. You must document all secondary sources as well as primary sources. Your textbook contains information about MLA style; or, you can ask me or the librarians for assistance.
Choose two short poems by the same author; explicate each of the poems by describing the rhyme, meter, imagery, figurative language, and meaning. Based on your analysis, draw conclusions about the poet’s style and purpose. Support your analysis with textual examples and two secondary articles from the Academic Databases available through the ACC library. You may NOT use Internet sources, such as Wikipedia or Sparknotes. The outside sources will provide support for your interpretations of the poems. Sources used to discuss the poet’s biography are permitted but do not count as secondary articles about the poems. Please include copies of the poems with your essay.
Suggested poets: Gwendolyn Brooks, Naomi Shahib Nye, or choose your own. Musical artists are acceptable as long as you can locate external sources that offer analyses of their writings (for example, Tupac Shakur has critical analyses of his work in the library databases so you could write about him).
